So far it’s another low snow year for the Madison area and the majority of Wisconsin. Luckily the the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (the UP) had received good lake effect snow this year, so I took a trip up north to check out their trails.

Andrea Roenning – January 18, 2025
I have been considering getting a new pair of skate skis and boots for many years because I frequently get blisters while skiing. I’m not sure if my technique is to blame or the fit of the boots, but it certainly took the fun out of long skis or skiing on subsequent days.
I went out to the Enjoy Winter showroom in Middleton, WI and got fitted for a new set of boots and bindings and they are sweet. I’m happy to report that after some long skis and skiing back to back days, I don’t have a single blister. The boots feel good, the skis glide well and I’m looking forward to more time on my skis.

I pulled out my snow depth map and noticed that the area near Manitowish Waters was looking pretty good so I headed up to Winman Trails to ski. This trail is lovely, well marked signs, great grooming and a very comfortable lodge with changing rooms.

Andrea Roenning – January 16, 2025
For my “Mom gets a weekend away” trip, I decided to spend some time in beautiful Minocqua Winter Park. I lucked out on the weather and conditions as they had gotten half a foot of snow earlier in the week and temps were around twenty degrees with low wind. The trails were expertly groomed, the base firm enough to glide easily, but soft enough so the occasional fall didn’t hurt. It’s the kind of snow where you feel confident and in control when taking on the hills.
