For my “Mom gets a weekend away” trip, I decided to spend some time in beautiful Minocqua Winter Park. I lucked out on the weather and conditions as they had gotten half a foot of snow earlier in the week and temps were around twenty degrees with low wind. The trails were expertly groomed, the base firm enough to glide easily, but soft enough so the occasional fall didn’t hurt. It’s the kind of snow where you feel confident and in control when taking on the hills.

My search for snow brought me to Northern Wisconsin this weekend. After a nice ski at the Moccasin Lake Ski Trail on Saturday, I decided to head to the Nine Mile Forest Trails near Wausau. The skate deck was in great shape and there was plenty of coverage from recent snowfalls, but the the nine degree high for the day left me with little glide.

Andrea Roenning – January 3, 2021
Our life leaves less time for skiing with a toddler at home, so we were lucky to head to the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) trails just outside of Rhinelander. The trails are open to the public most weekends unless there is a ski race, but the particular time that we visited we found the grooming to be impeccable and no one else skiing the trails. There were plenty of volunteers preparing for the big high school and middle school races that would be held the following weekend.
